SHAKESPEARE AND HOLLYWOOD

Shakespeare's plays have appeared on film since the nineteenth-century.
There are operas, ballets, cartoons, television sit-coms, and silent movies based on his drama.  In this course, we will be watching and talking about a range of Shakespearean productions on film, including such familiar works as those by Kenneth Branagh and Laurence Olivier as well as films made in a variety of genre by companies around the world.  During the class, we will be viewing and discussing films both old and new from the US, UK, China, India, Japan, and Australia.  Some will be fairly straightforward productions, others use techniques such as puppets, animation, American Sign Language, computer graphics and music in order to reach a range of audiences.

This class is designed for teachers and for the general public.
Students will be asked to read a play in advance of each class in order to facilitate viewing and discussion.  Previous Shakespeare in Hollywood students are welcome to participate: there are always more Shakespeare films to enjoy!
