High School Acting Competition

Georgia Shakespeare’s 7th Annual High School Acting Competition

It’s that time again! Georgia Shakespeare’s 7th Annual High School Acting Competition is open to all Georgia high school students, grades 9-12.   A remarkable way to showcase committed and talented acting students as well as expose them to professional workshops and master classes, this annual event is an Atlanta tradition.

This competition is open to members of school drama programs or clubs as well as individual students.  

However, schools with five or more participating students are eligible to enter the Shakespeare Sweepstakes!

Guidelines:

This competition is focused in Shakespeare and all submitted monologues and scenes should be those by William Shakespeare.

Monologues should be no longer than two minutes in length; scenes should be no longer than seven minutes with only two actors per scene. Participants will be evaluated by members of the award-winning Georgia Shakespeare Acting Company.

What You Can WIN!

Scholarships and Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third in the following categories:

Shakespeare Sweepstakes

*Determined by the average of the five highest scoring participants from each school.

First place receives a free performance of next year’s tour for their school.

Best Monologue

First place receives a scholarship to Georgia Shakespeare's High School Conservatory, worth $600.

The conservatory takes place the last two weeks in July 15th-26th.

Best Scene Presentation

First place receives scholarships to Georgia Shakespeare's High School Conservatory, worth $600. The conservatory takes place July 15th-26th.

Medals and gift certificates will be awarded to runners-up in each category.

When: Saturday April 26th, 2014 from 9:00-5:00pm

Cost: $25.00 entrance fee per student.

​​Camp Shakespeare: Homeschool Edition

Camp Shakespeare provides students ages 7 to 14 the opportunity to explore the magic of live theatre and take the Bard's words off of the page and onto the stage, as campers craft their very own performance. Using theater games, acting exercises, arts and crafts and a lot of imagination, children learn while having a great time! On the final day of camp, the kids take what they have learned and present a special performance for friends and family. Though this camp is intented for Homeschool students, all students are welcome!

What:  Two simultaneous sessions for ages 7-10 & 11-14

When: Monday - Friday, February 17th- 21st, 2014,

10AM - 2PM.

Such Stuff: Camp Shakespeare

Session 1, Mirth and Laughter: 9:00am-3:00pm, June 16th, 2014-June 27th, 2014

Cost: $500.00

Session 2, Defy the Stars: 9:00am-3:00pm, June 30th, 2014-July 11th, 2014

Description: This camp is available for students in grades 2nd-6th. Participants enter the wonderful world of theatre and discover one of the world’s greatest writers. Using theatre games, improvisation arts, acting exercises, arts and crafts and a whole lot of imagination, participants will learn the basics of theatrical performance while having a great time. Participants present a special performance on the final day for friends and family. Session 1 will focus on A Comedy of Errors  and Much Ado About Nothing. Session II will focus on Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth.

The Georgia Shakespeare High School Conservatory

 

When: 10:00am-5:00pm, July 15th, 2014-July 26th, 2014

Description: This program is available to high school students who wish to further focus on their training as an actor. This two-week intensive is an opportunity to work with members of Georgia Shakespeare’s acting company and other Atlanta professional artists in the areas of voice and text, movement, monologue and scene work. In addition there are Master Classes offered in stage combat and audition technique. As part of the Conservatory, participants will learn one Shakespearean monologue and one scene to be performed for friends and family on the mainstage of the Conant Performing Arts Center on the final day.

Intro to Shakespeare

Grades: 3-12

Georgia Shakespeare's most popular workshop serves as an introduction to the life and times of William Shakespeare. Historical background, word games, improvisation, scenes from Shakespeare's greatest hits, and stage combat make this program a fun and lively introduction the the Bard.

Duration: 50 Minutes

*This workshop is best presented to an audience of 30 or less

Speak the Speech

Grades 4-12

This interactive performance workshop gives students the chance to test their knowledge of Shakespeare through a fun, and exciting game show. Hosted by Associate Artist and Education Director Allen O’Reilly, students will be given clues as to what Shakespearean monologues he is performing. The selections range from Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice to Richard III. This is the perfect educational will delight both students and teachers alike!

Macbeth the Man

Grades 4-12

Get inside the thought process of one of Shakespeare’s greatest creations in this interactive workshop performance. Macbeth’s most famous soliloquies are explored and student volunteers will have the opportunity to perform alongside Georgia Shakespeare Associate Artist Allen O’Reilly as Macbeth. Discover through performance, action and discussion how a man can commit “murder, most foul.”

Riotous Youth: High School Shakespeare Ensemble

Grades 9-12

When: Saturdays: October 12th 2013-April 5th 2014, 1:00pm-5:00pm

What: Through Riotous Youth, students will  be exposed to a wide variety of theatrical techniques including: stage combat, voice & text work, movement, and Alexander technique. The class will culminate in in s full production of either Romeo & Juliet or The Tempest on April 12th & 19th 2014.

This class will rehearse on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Saturdays of each month, with the exception of December (12/14 and 12/21) and March (we will meet every Saturday during this month)

Director: Allen O’Reilly and professional guest Instructors from Georgia Shakespeare and the Atlanta community!

Participants must audition for one sixteen slots. Auditions to be held: Saturday, September 14th from 2:00-5:00 PM, please prepare one Shakespeare monologue no longer than a minute and a half.

Rate: $1,200.00 for approximately 18 4 hour classes

*There are two partial scholarships available for this course.

Discover Shakespeare: Bringing Shakespeare Alive in the Classroom

Description: This is a Monday through Friday institute is available for teachers of English and/or Drama grades 4 through 12, who wish  to use performance-based techniques in their classrooms. This intensive will provide you with enriching and exciting options to supplement your curriculum. Learn the newest techniques behind making Shakespeare fun for your students in a casual, relaxed environment. These techniques can also be applied to teaching a variety of classic materials as well as other subjects. It is also a fun and unique way to obtain 2.5 professional development credit hours.
